Patricia Anne Sparkes 1949-2026
Born around midnight between January 1 and 2 of 1949 to Tom Sparkes and Margaret Sparkes (nee Tobin) at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Pat lost her long struggle with liver failure just after midnight on Wednesday 27 October 2026.
Pat is survived by her husband Jess H. Brewer, their son Jedidiah Daniel Brewer, their daughter Rebecca Claire Brewer, her sisters Beverly Vandall and Catherine Vigeant and their families, her brother Peter Sparkes and his family, her former husband Brian Ozzard, her great aunt Mavis Weston and her family, and hundreds (if not thousands) of friends and colleagues whom she has helped accomplish seemingly impossible achievements over the decades.
After a difficult childhood, Pat showed her mettle by learning to build and fix electronics & computers and becoming the go-to project coordinator (the person you went to if you needed something hard to find, or when a Christmas party or a Summer Barbecue needed organizing) at TRIUMF, Canada’s accelerator laboratory, where she was one of TRIUMF’s first employees in 1971.(??)
In 1980 Pat was “borrowed” from TRIUMF by Jess, whose Physics career at UBC was largely her accomplishment. Disillusioned with the collisions of Officialdom with matrimony, they opted for a simple ceremony with the Justice of Peace; but a quarter of a century later they decided to celebrate their commitment before friends and family in a “Re-marriage” ceremony recorded at https://jick.net/~jess/pix/wedding — wherein Pat is described in more detail.
