Quips

  Quip of the Moment:

Walking in to TRIUMF from the parking lot at 04:30 this morning, I met a young woman walking out to her car. She moved to the far side of the road and acknowledged my greeting reluctantly, reminding me of the Canadian propensity for paranoia about fashionable, though largely imaginary, hazards. I think it is the contrast with Manhattan, where fear of rape is entirely justified but does not rule emotions, that makes this phenomenon so obvious to me now. But it has always been oppressive to be treated like a criminal just because I am male. (2002-03-02)
