We seem compelled to polarize
\nour thoughts, beliefs and politics:
\nwhile trying to seem to empathize,
\nwe’re always planning dirty tricks.
\nWe see ourselves as the Goodest Guys
\nwhile all the Other Guys are pricks.
\nWe’re always fooled by our own disguise
\ndesigned to get us into cliques
\nin which we hope the others’ eyes
\nwill see in us the final fix.<\/p>\n
Occasionally our faith will rise,
\ndefining new axes in the mix,
\nnew reasons to love or to despise,
\nembrace our priests or beat with sticks
\nthose who prefer some different lies —
\nbut never just accept for kicks,
\nor superpose, or laws devise
\nthat build the rights of all in bricks
\nof edifices of a size
