{"id":909,"date":"2025-02-12T17:03:36","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T01:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/?p=909"},"modified":"2025-02-12T17:03:36","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T01:03:36","slug":"day-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/?p=909","title":{"rendered":"Day One"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>(This is not really a poem.)<\/h5>\n<h5><em>20 Jan 2025<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Today Donald Trump was inaugurated.<br \/>\nAgain.<br \/>\nAfter bragging about &#8220;grabbing them [girls] by the pussy.&#8221;<br \/>\nAfter being convicted of 34 felonies.<br \/>\nAfter being indicted for treason.<br \/>\nAfter saying several times that he would be &#8220;a dictator on day 1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How did this happen?<br \/>\nI feel compelled to try to understand.<\/p>\n<p>I think it began with the Internet,<br \/>\nwhich liberated us all from Authority:<br \/>\nthe great democratization of information,<br \/>\nthat allowed each person to declare individual autonomy &#8212;<br \/>\nthe right (nay, the <em>duty<\/em>) to trust our own instincts<br \/>\nand make up our own mind what is true, what is false,<br \/>\nwhat matters, what doesn&#8217;t,<br \/>\nwhat is necessary, what is not,<br \/>\nwhat must be done and what must not be done.<\/p>\n<p>That is gratifying, but it is also a burden &#8212;<br \/>\nespecially when applied to what we must <em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em> do or not do.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s not how it works.<br \/>\nGetting anything done collectively requires cooperation.<br \/>\nCooperation requires negotiation,<br \/>\nand sometimes compromise: sometimes you have to have faith<br \/>\nin others&#8217; good faith and the collective wisdom.<br \/>\nWe no longer have that.<\/p>\n<p>And so, both to get things done<br \/>\nand to escape the oppression of choice,<br \/>\nthe people of the United States elected a dictator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(This is not really a poem.) 20 Jan 2025 Today Donald Trump was inaugurated.
