{"id":88,"date":"2014-10-05T20:46:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-05T20:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jick.net\/wordpress\/?p=88"},"modified":"2014-10-27T19:21:11","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T19:21:11","slug":"platinum-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/?p=88","title":{"rendered":"Platinum Rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people seem to think the Golden Rule is all we need: &#8220;Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.&#8221;\u00a0 Well, that would certainly be an improvement upon the more prevalent, &#8220;Do unto others <em>before<\/em> they do unto you,&#8221; but it doesn&#8217;t really help unless we exercise some subtlety and foresight.\u00a0 It is probably a good thing to tell someone if they are behaving like an ass.\u00a0 On the other hand, how keen are you to be the recipient of such honesty when it&#8217;s the truth?\u00a0 Hmmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the problem of misapprehending other people&#8217;s <em>intent<\/em> &#8212; not to mention <em>your own<\/em>!\u00a0 The most common cause of animosity is attribution of evil intent to someone who believes s\/he is trying to do the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>I propose a &#8220;<strong>Platinum Rule<\/strong>&#8221; that should be exercised even more assiduously than the Golden Rule.\u00a0 It goes like this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Try to understand <em>why<\/em> others think and act as they do.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most people are sincerely trying to do what they perceive as the right thing.\u00a0 If you can understand <em>why<\/em> they believe that, then you have a better foundation for constructive dialogue than if you accuse them of intentional evil.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, intentional evil does occur; but even then it is easier to expose if you try to explore other explanations.\u00a0 Nothing annoys a true evil-doer like a pointed question that assumes their innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Note that I am <em>not<\/em> espousing &#8220;radical cultural relativism&#8221; &#8212; just because you understand why someone thinks and acts as they do does not mean you agree with or excuse their behaviour; it just gives you some purchase in your attempts to talk them out of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people seem to think the Golden Rule is all we need: &#8220;Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.&#8221;\u00a0 Well, that would certainly be an improvement upon the more prevalent, &#8220;Do unto others before they do unto you,&#8221; but it doesn&#8217;t really help unless we exercise<a href=\"https:\/\/jick.ca\/?p=88\" class=\"read-more\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-88","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-rants"],"gutentor_comment":4,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=88"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":109,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88\/revisions\/109"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=88"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=88"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jick.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=88"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
