I hate preachy poems. Don\u2019t we all?
\nBut is this even poetry? These days,
\nhow can one decide? It seems to fall
\nto each of us to choose our favorite ways
\nof jumping out of prosody and call
\nthose \u201cpoems\u201d and thus worthy of our praise.<\/p>\n
To suit my tastes, I\u2019ve thrown in meter and
\na painfully simple sampling of rhyme,
\nas if I hoped to form a little band
\nand sell this tripe as musically sublime.
\nIn truth, I craft a vehicle so bland
\nit won\u2019t divert you from the point this time.<\/p>\n
When we are young and running in the race
\nto reproduce more quickly than the rest,
\nhormones fuel lust for hair and face
\nand legs and arms and clitoris and breast
\nuntil the glans is sheathed and thrusting\u2019s pace
\nincreases to the climax and the test:<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, will you stay or will you go
\nlooking for another place to plant
\nyour seeds? Imperatives of nature know
\ntheir preference; are you recalcitrant?
\nHave had enough of planting? Will you show
\nthat you can love as well as sweat and pant?<\/p>\n
Later it gets easier to stay
\nas endocrine compulsions fade away.<\/p>\n
