I recapitulate my grandmother:<\/p>\n
When her husband died
\nshe traveled the world for a decade
\nbringing home mementos
\nbut all she really wanted to remember was him
\nand when that longing couldn\u2019t be distracted
\nshe turned to daytime TV and junk food,
\nrenouncing her life.<\/p>\n
Her life got even
\nby hanging on to her for 103 years.
\nFinally she refused to eat, and we let her go.<\/p>\n
Today, after two plague years
\nand a decade of undetected
\nfascist takeover
\nand a lifetime of burning fossils
\nI grow numb from scanning the southern sky
\nfor \ufb01reballs
\nand the news for climate catastrophe,
\nand daytime TV starts to appeal
\nand junk food starts to look good
\nand I\u2019m tired of being ashamed
\nfor doing too little to stop this
\nand I wonder when I\u2019ll stop eating.<\/p>\n
