A sodden mind sheds soggy morals
\noff its duck’s-back basis of relief.
\nSquatting now upon their laurels
\nyears of yearning learning get relief.<\/p>\n
An open mind is fertile earth,
\nideas raining down on it at length;
\nlike land, it drinks when near its birth
\nwith gusto, turning moisture into strength.<\/p>\n
The summer mind’s ideas flower,
\nflourish with the rains, until at last
\nits fruits and foliage – wisdom’s power –
\nare harvested, and the day of youth is past.<\/p>\n
Now Autumn minds grow brown of leaf
\nand rains erode the sated autumn earth.
\nThe spare supply of wet belief
\nis wasted. Lack of want destroys its worth.<\/p>\n
Yet know that though the ground will freeze
\nand snows of dullness cover summer’s green,
\nyet ice will melt with the first warm breeze;
\nand somewhere there are always evergreens.<\/p>\n
