I enter quick,
\nRabbit-scared of the dry sticks,
\nCrackling reeds and weeds, once-watered sedge;
\nDry fear, dangerous, eats at the swamp’s crisp edge.<\/p>\n

With the muddening of the earth
\nMy scampering softens to a slink;
\nLungs reach tenderly to touch the humus stink,
\nShrink, but stay; I give dead stumps less berth.<\/p>\n

Gracefully crawling now by scummy pools,
\nI hide in spidery grasses, feel small fishes
\nNibbling like persistent wishes;
\nSoftly at first the swamp asserts its rules.<\/p>\n

Insects, intermittent frog-falls intersperse
\nThe silence; alligator calls now echo low.
\nCoiled and bead-eyed, I need not rehearse
\nThe slither or the strike — for now I know
\nThe serpent’s still-imperfect marriage; more,
\nThat even this fearless moccasin form of man
\nPays obeisance to the land.
\nAll’s as before.<\/p>\n
